Old Town, Fort Collins Neighborhood

Ryan Jenkins

Old Town is where so many people fall in love with Fort Collins. This vibrant downtown area is the icon of the city. Here, Fort Collins still feels like a quaint western town. Downtown’s meticulously maintained, mid-19 th century architecture houses a myriad shops, eateries, bars, music venues and coffee houses. Wide streets that once accommodated horses and wagons, now allow bikes, pedestrians and cars to co-exist easily. On the north edge of Old Town, world class breweries sit near the banks of the Poudre River. On the south edge of Old Town you’ll find the Colorado State University campus pumping a youthful energy into the city. The Old Town residential area surrounding downtown is for many the most desirable place to live in Fort Collins. Proximity to downtown and charming architecture creates an incredibly alluring neighborhood. While some new construction has taken place in the last decade, most homes still resemble their turn-of-the-century origins. Massive spruce, elm, ash and maple trees add to the ambiance. A drive down Mountain Avenue on the west side of Old Town will take you by some of the more impressive homes in the area.

It’s helpful to know when searching for homes in the area that Old Town is not technically the name for a specific neighborhood. Rather, it’s a general term used for the area immediately surrounding the downtown area. Old Town is made up of a few different neighborhoods such as West Side, Loomis, Prospect Place, Washington Place, Golding Dwyre, Reclemation Village, Cotton’s Re-Sub, Scott Sherwood, Westlawn, Tennyson Heights, Stills and Lessers. Rather than describe the location of each of these neighborhoods, we’ll show you a map of the area most folks refer to as Old Town. While the boundaries of Old Town could be debated, we consider the area indicated in the map below as Old Town because it contains a high percentage of homes built in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
